Last Time Sitting Next To Mom by Florence Wang

ARTIST NOTES: Growing up mom has always been my best friend. She has given me her love and care in almost every possible way. The interactions between us have become more precious and memorable ever since I left her to study and work in a different country. Although we do not often agree with each other particularly when it comes to topics in art, the conversations between us have always been engaging and supportive. Mom used to work as an engineer. The older I become, the more I appreciate the strength, resilience, and intelligence in her as a professional woman and as a mother. Due to the pandemics, it has been almost impossible for us to be able to travel and visit each other. But the memory when we were able to sit down next to each other was still so vivid. This painting is a mental reflection of mine for our last physical interaction. I eagerly await a time when I could travel to see mom again.

Artist: Florence Wang

Florence is a Melbourne based artist whose main art practice is in painting and drawing with traditional medium. Besides art, she has a background in Data Science.:

"Painting to me is something personal and special in life. While the earliest memory in art perhaps dated back to practising traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy as a child, I had an art teacher in painting/drawing at the age of eight. Academically, I have considered myself to be very fortunate. In 2014, I earned my PhD in Computer Science from studying the intricacies of visual similarity that lies among different types of digital art imageries. I then continued my journey in science by working at CSIRO for another five years. At the beginning of 2020, both lockdown and a small career change propelled me to recommence my art practice at a more regular cadence.

As an artist, I am interested in using my work as a visual expression for my thought process as an individual. Beyond the visual qualities, I am a believer in arts with great emotional and psychological depth and their story telling power to the intended audience. I hope to carry that belief into my day-to-day art practice."
